An awesome find. A well played, yet carefully cared for, 1958 Oahu Tonemaster Lap Steel Guitar with the awesome original Hard Shell Case!
Kay made these awesome high quality lap steels starting in 1948 and used this Headstock design from 1950 thru 1959. This one has a serial number of T547 which corresponds to the Supro Numbers identifying it as a almost last year 1958!
This beauty is completely original except the strings. Knobs, that look incredible…see pics…tuners with the original Kluson Single Line tuners and even still has the much sought after Treble Cleft Bridge cover. Those are always missing! …No abuse and was well cared for. It has some funny overlay that may be tape on the back of the headstock..see pics 7 and 8... I left them alone.. Pro Setup with new Dobro Strings. It plays and sounds fantastic… The Valco Single coil pickup sounds incredible. Cuts you like a knife with full treble but back the tone pot off and its really really mellow...love the sound!
Heres some info on these cool instruments..
Oahu Tonemaster Model Lap Steel Electric Guitar, c. 1950, made in Chicago, sunburst lacquer finish, maple body and neck.
A cool and fairly deluxe Oahu-branded steel guitar built by Kay, from the 1950's. The wood body is built of a solid center block with outlying wings (like later Rickenbacker guitars) with striking checkerboard binding on all edges. The metal bridge unit holds the pickup and controls, with a knob on each side and a fairly heavy stamped metal cover. The pickup itself is very similar in design to a Gibson P-90, if somewhat brighter sounding. The headstock is faced in tortoise celluloid with a "Tonemaster" stencil in a music note motif.
Overall length is 34 in. (86.4 cm.), 10 in. (25.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (50 mm.). Singe Line Kluson tuners. Overall a nice and fairly high-end steel for Oahu with a bright but sweet sound.
Yes, this Made in Chicago Oahu lap steel has all the original parts. We put some new Dobro strings on this one. The old strings were shot and I believe were 13 gauge.
Check out the original case with this old timer. Only one latch doesn't work. The other two work great as does the hinges and original handle. The tolex is, of course, torn and worn in a few places. But the interior is still really nice with the plush Blue Lining. No funny odors or indications of interior mildewing. A really nice Vintage case!
This Lap Steel is very cool but sold as-is as its vintage and used. However, I have been hand picking my customers instruments for close to 20 years now and they have all loved the instruments I find. This cool Oahu Lap Steel will not be an exception.
Thanks for checking out our cool guitars, amps and gear..
