Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting…

A really cool 1972 Tan Ovation Model 1251, Breadwinner, with the original Ovation Hardshell Case. Made in CT USA!

First of all, this guitar does not have the active Preamp system in it. The Preamp was unrepairable. We tried everything to get it working again and finally decided to rewire, repot and get this old timer working again. The pickups sound great, we were able to keep the out of Phase function in the middle position and it sound wonderful! The old Ovation pots were dated 1972… we are calling it a 1972 from that information from the guitar. Hard to get a read from the serial number. They just give a broad 1971 thru 1979 with that serial number.

What a cool way out design for the day. I have always thought these Breadwinner guitars were so cool and was excited to find one locally. I am not unhappy that we unhooked the active electronics. I have never liked dealing with batteries in guitars. You don’t have that issue any longer with this one. I think we can do without an active power boost in the guitar. That’s what pedals are for…LOL..

Besides the electronics, the guitar is all original except for a couple tuner covers. The ovation tuner covers were missing on two so we replaced them with Shaller covers that look great. One small cigarette burn by the butt end..see pic 8… otherwise, good frets with lots of life and everything is checked out by one of our Pro Techs. Its set up great with a set of new 10’s…

Heres some info I found on internet regarding these cool guitars..

Brand name: Breadwinner

  • Electric Guitar

Dates of manufacture:

1971 to 1979

The axe shaped Ovation Breadwinner (model 1251) was made between 1971 and 1979. The Breadwinner shared the same mahogany body as the more expensive Deacon model, but had solid color textured Lyrachord finish (white, black, blue or tan), dot inlays, unbound fingerboard.Early models were had with Ovation's toroidal single pole pickups while later models were equipped with humbuckers. The Breadwinner also had an active FET preamp, giving a wide range of tones Ovation published a guide to sounds where they listed various band and song "signature" sounds and the control settings to use to achieve those sounds.

I always wondered where the name Breadwinner came from…the ad I found said they listened to the needs from Professional Guitar Players and then conceived the Breadwinner. Take it to a gig and be the “Breadwinner”…Cool…huh!!

Don’t forget the awesome original Ovation branded Hard Shell Case that comes with this guitar. Just as nice as the guitar and happy to have it. With the shape of this guitar, you would be hard pressed to find a proper case for it. A great find to have this guitar with the case.

Awesome guitar but its vintage and used so its sold as-is no returns..however, I have been hand picking my customers instruments for over 18 years now and they all loved the guitars I found them. This cool Ovation Breadwinner will certainly not be an exception.

Thanks for checking out our cool guitars!
